Tomorrow, a nurse with a bachelor's degree and, especially
an advanced degree, may have even more opportunities for his/her
career pathways to expand, especially as health care delivery and
technology advance and change in this new millennium.
It has been said, “A person will change careers three or more
times throughout his/her lifetime.” What is unique about having a
nursing degree and being licensed as an RN is that you can change
careers without changing your profession. Consider these current
diverse options:
- Hospital, clinic, or office nurse
- Business owner
- Flight nurse
- Computer/Informatics expert
- Triage Nurse in emergency care
- Inventor
- Home health or hospice nurse
- Advanced nurse practitioner (employee or private practice)
- Labor & delivery or neonatal nurse
- General, US Armed Service
- Nurse Attorney, legal consultant
- Nurse Administrator or University Dean
- Research nurse with clinical trials
- Product sales representative
- International consultant
- ...And the list goes on.
Career pathways also exist within specific job or employment settings. There are
Las Vegas Nursing Jobs that fit into all career pathways.
Here are a couple of examples:
- Hospital: General nurse > charge nurse > head nurse >
nurse manager > department manager > assistant nursing director > director of nursing.
- Nursing School: Instructor > assistant professor >
full professor > department chair > assistant dean > dean.
Within certain RN roles and positions, career pathways are advanced by
means of educational preparation and specialty certification.
The following are examples:
- Advanced Practice: Educational preparation requires a master's degree
or higher degree; certification also is required in Southern Nevada.
Advanced nursing roles include nurse practitioner (NP or APN — in Southern
Nevada legally termed advanced practice nurse); certified nurse midwife
(CNM); clinical nurse specialist (CNS); certified registered nurse
anesthetist (CRNA).
- Educator in Practice Settings: bachelor's degree and certification
required. Roles may include diabetes educator; patient/health/wellness
educator; preceptor; staff development; continuing education.
- Educator in Academic Settings: In associate and diploma programs,
a MSN is preferred and often required. In universities and institutions
of higher learning a doctorate or a MSN transitioning to doctorate is
required — especially for a professorship.
- Specialty Nursing: BSN or higher degree with role — specific continuing
education preferred. Nurse role examples are school — employee — occupational
health, infection control, public health, and researcher.
- Staff RN: Associate degree, diploma, bachelor's degree, or master's degree
with inservice and/or continuing education appropriate to a specialty. Certification
is a possibility for some roles. Educational requirement is frequently dependent on
an employer's policies.
- Nursing Management: master's degree or higher generally required. Roles would
include chief nursing officer, chief operating officer, chief executive officer,
and clinical services or office manager
- Other Roles & Positions: This category includes roles for which a nursing
background can be helpful; but which may require additional education or preparation
outside of nursing. Role examples include nurse attorney, consultant,
pharmaceutical/medical supply sales, policy makers, and professional
nursing / health organization staff.
